Digital Séance Live Set

To Celebrate the release of their EP ‘Digital Séance’ (Available now for as Pay What You Want on the Katharsis Bandcamp page), Sugar Ross has this month recorded a special live set edition of Happy Together, attempting another ‘Digital Séance’, using a similar process to those used to create the EP around the same time last year. 
Join in as Sugar looks to talk with spirits and ghosts amongst the radio static live to air.

Happy Together: Sugar Ross X Blackphone 666 – 19/04/2021

For this month’s edition of Happy Together I am excited to announce that I am joined by one of my favourite noise artists, Japan’s Blackphone666.

黒電話666 A.K.A Blackphone666 is a noise musician and visual artist from Nakano, Tokyo, Japan, who has been making Extreme electric sound radicals since 2001, and is known for the iconic use of a traditional old style Japanese black telephone in the creation of his intricate, harsh but also booming noise/ sound assaults.

I’ve used a piece recorded by Blackphone666 in 2015 called ‘ACQUIRED’, that he kindly re-mastered and sent to me to use for this piece of HKCR.
I’ve broken his track into multiple sections and combined it with a collection of my own improvised recordings, titled ‘Orbital Data 000001’, and then set the entire piece to a pitched down recording taken from the back streets of a sleepy Australian country town.

Orbital Data is recorded entirely using the Virtual Synthesiser ‘Quadrivium’ which uses real time orbital data from the 12 moons of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune to modulate and create music across four oscillators. 

The artwork for this episode is a film shot I took in Japan of a live Blackphone666 performance in Tokyo, 2016.

Sugar Ross @sugarross is joinged by Japanese Experimentalist and Modular Adventurer, Yoshitake Kawai @yoshitakekawai for this month’s edition of Happy Together. Sound colleague and imrpovised set.

Listen along to this month’s edition of Happy Together, as I am joined by Japanese Experimentalist and Modular Adventurer, Yoshitake Kawai. Coming together we have created this one off, somewhat improvised (two sets of Improvised recordings, that were pasted together like a sonic jigsaw puzzle) sound collage. Both Yoshitake and I recorded 30-45 minutes of live and improvised material, which I then placed together over the top of a collection of field recordings. A global and all-embracing journey trudging through experimental sound territory, including and short introduction piece played by my Blue Tongue Lizard, George across a MIDI controller of the Kontakt Yangqin plug-in.

After reading Kato David Hopkins book ‘Rumours of Noizu: The Road to 2nd Damascus’ I was inspired to put together a mixtape completely of Japanese Noizu.
